Did you know that studies have found that “sweet” is the first taste that babies show cravings for? This may go into the “science discovers the obvious” department but shows how hard-wired we are to love sweet foods. And that often means sugar.
So what are some ways we can kick that overwhelming itch for sugar to the curb (especially when you don’t have some low-calorie Cloud & Joy on hand)?
One of the reasons sugar is so addictive is that it triggers the release of endorphins (the “pleasure” chemicals in your brain). Guess what other food is an endorphin trigger? That’s right, chocolate! But make sure it’s dark chocolate of 70% cacao or more. True dark chocolate is better for you than milk chocolate, usually containing less fat and sugar. Plus, the higher concentration of cacao means you get more of the ‘chocolate effect’ while eating less. Even if it’s not as sweet, it helps. Of course, a little should go a long way — many dark chocolate products are still loaded with sugar and fat. The closer you can get to pure the better.
